Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia, or “lazy eye,” is a condition where one eye develops poor vision due to inadequate use during early childhood. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent vision impairment in the affected eye. Amblyopia can result from a variety of causes, including strabismus (squint), refractive errors (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism), or cataracts.

Diagnosis

A thorough eye examination is done to detect any refractive errors or misalignment that could cause amblyopia.

Treatment Options

Glasses

Specially prescribed glasses to help align the eyes and correct refractive errors

Eye Patches

Used to strengthen the weaker eye and improve vision.

Surgical Intervention

In some cases, eye muscle surgery may be required to align the eyes correctly.

Botulinum Toxin Injections (Botox)

In some cases, Botox injections may be used to temporarily correct eye misalignment, especially in adults or older children.

Treatment Options

Patch Therapy

The healthy eye is patched to encourage the use of the weaker eye, helping to improve its visual acuity.

Atropine Eye Drops

These drops are used to blur the vision of the stronger eye, encouraging the weaker eye to work harder.

Corrective Eyewear

Glasses are prescribed to correct refractive errors, which can help improve vision in the lazy eye.

Botulinum Toxin Injections (Botox)

Specialized exercises and treatments to improve coordination between the eyes and brain, enhancing the weaker eye's function.

Pediatric Eye Exams

Routine eye exams are essential for detecting vision problems early in children, even if no symptoms are present. Early intervention can prevent more serious issues later in life.

Comprehensive Eye Exams

A complete eye exam includes tests for visual acuity, eye alignment, and overall eye health, ensuring that vision problems are identified and treated early.
